Thus Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales stay exactly as they are within the EU, whilst England retains UK membership, but negotiates terms to leave the EU.

Anything is worth a try if it wards off disaster or gains a bit of time. On the problem for the negotiators I really wonder whether in fairness to all concerned there is not now a responsibility on the Scottish government to seek an early Scottish referendum so that, win or lose, we know where we stand

But it would not be anything like as smooth or speedy as could be achieved if there was a very rapid indyref2 in early 2017, which currently looks unlikely.”

“A successful indyref2 in 2018 could facilitate a relatively fast-track route for Scotland to rejoin the EU, but Scotland will not be able to stay in the EU if it is still legally part of the UK when the UK leaves.”…

Choice presented to the Scottish people in late 2018 indyref;
1) Remain in the UK, remain out of EU and single market, continue to cede control of wealth, taxation, resources etc to Westminster

2) Vote to leave the UK, whereby accepting a transitional (2 year?) period of non-membership of the EU, after which Scotland gain immediate, EU negotiated, return to EU and benefits of single market. Membership of EU coinciding with personal control of wealth, taxation, resources etc. Discussions/referendums over future membership of EU – and UK – if desirable, decided by people of Scotland.
